Bay mau Cam Thanh Nipa Palm Forest

Located approximately 5 km southeast of Hoi An Ancient Town, Bay Mau Cam Thanh Nipa Palm Forest in Hoi An Dong Ward, Da Nang City, is a critical estuarine wetland ecosystem within the lower Thu Bon River basin and an important UNESCO-recognized Cu Lao Cham - Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve buffer zone. With its interlacing rivers, canals and extensive nipa palm forest, the area forms a distinctive riverine ecological landscape that is rare in Central Vietnam. According to local elders, the forest was established more than 200 years ago when residents brought nipa palm varieties from Southern Vietnam. Its original area was about seven hecta, giving rise to the name “Bay Mau Nipa Palm Forest”. Over time, the forest expanded, became a core source of livelihood, and served as a resilient historical bastion and community heritage site. Today, the destination is known for its unique nipa palm ecosystem, pristine natural scenery and vibrant local culture. Visitors can row basket boats, cast fishing nets, explore the daily life of local fishermen, enjoy local cuisine and join ecotourism activities linked to environmental protection. These experiences present an authentic image of Vietnamese riverine rural life and affirm the village’s green, sustainable and community-based tourism development model.
